York Stone is not all the same!

The Yorkstone supplied by the Natural Stone Steps company is a superb example of genuine ‘Yorkstone’ which became famous as a material for steps, paving, roofing and as a building stone. Today virtually any sandstone from Yorkshire is marketed as ‘Yorkstone’ but the quality varies enormously and many are not worthy of the name. True Yorkstone comes from rocks of the Lower Coal Measures of the Upper Carboniferous era, and the best for steps and paving, are taken from strata belonging to the Elland Flags formation. Even within the Elland Flags there is variation in quality but the stone supplied by the Natural Stone Steps company is as good as I’ve ever seen. The sandstone is superb in quality, strong with even grain and perfect grip. They are free from strong banding but sometimes show an attractive, faint, wispy banding though generally the rock has a very classy, neutral buff appearance.

So good is stone from the Elland Flags that much of London was paved using this genuine York Stone, but now supplies are increasingly rare. Sandstones are not all the same and the rock supplied by the Natural Stone Steps company is one of the finest available for steps and paving, which is why of course, genuine York Stone has become famous worldwide.
